The 3rd Brunei-China Art and Visual Culture Festival opened at Baiduri Bank Headquarters on September 27, celebrating the enduring friendship between Brunei and China through art, culture, and shared history. “Art is the most beautiful language of the human soul. It transcends national boundaries, ethnicity and language, touching hearts and inspiring resonance,” said His Excellency Xiao Jianguo, Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam, during the opening ceremony.

Festival founder Huifong Ng reflected on the festival’s origins in 2021, recalling support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Brunei Darussalam, which noted the festival’s potential to impact both participants and bilateral relations at the grassroots level. “As the years have unfolded, the vision has grown into a tradition, a living bridge between two nations, built not of stone but of colours, stories, and the shared language of art and culture,” she said.
The event was organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Brunei, Nanjing Municipal People’s Government, and Juyi Cross-Cultural and Arts Company, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Brunei Darussalam and Baiduri Bank. Artists from China and Brunei across multiple disciplines, along with students from Anthony Abell College, contributed to the collective exhibition.
This year’s program featured two major exhibitions: “Peony and Simpur: A Friendship in Bloom” and “A Silk Legacy: From Maritime Past to Belt and Road Future,” highlighting centuries of shared history and cultural exchange. The opening also included performances by the world-famous Little Red Flower Art Troupe from Nanjing, who performed a range of pieces including the traditional Bruneian song “Cabuk-Cabuk Bertali Rambai,” symbolizing the bond between the sister cities of Nanjing and Bandar Seri Begawan.

Additional activities included a screening of “Ne Zha 2”, and a panel discussion titled “Sea Trade History between Brunei and China, and its Future Outlook”, featuring Dr. Hj. Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong, Principal of Brunei History Centre; Professor Hoon Chang Yau, Founding Director of the International Office at Singapore University of Social Sciences; Dr. Hj Rozan Yunos, President of PESEBAR; and Dato Shofry Abdul Ghafor, President of the Brunei Art Forum.
Visitors were also invited to experience Chinese calligraphy firsthand during the two days of the festival.
“There is unparalleled beauty in our unique cultures and traditions, and when we come together, that beauty is magnified—not only through art but through our shared humanity. Events like this strengthen understanding, cultivate empathy, and foster lasting connections between communities, ” remarked Ti Eng Hui, CEO of Baiduri Bank. Director of Art and Culture at Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Hj. Awang Mohd. Abdoh bin Hj. Awang Damit was also present.
The festival attracted 300 visitors locally and regionally.
